Kumar Purnima - Kumara Punei Janha Go | Full Lyrics

Today is Kumar Poornima. I was reminded of all the Kumar Pornima celebrated during childhood with Pitha, Mitha, offerings to the Janha and later the song "Kumara Punei Janha Go Phula Baula Beni". And of course pranam (Mundiya) to the elders and getting coins or rupees in exchange.


Kumar Purnima is a festival where Karthik the handsome bachelor and the Son of Shiva and Parvati is worshipped. Girls worship Karthik wishing for a beau like him and eat after offering to the full moon. The day is also observed as Laxmi Puja or Gaja Laxmi Pooja by some.

Kumar Utsav is a popular festival now with the peppy song accompanied by folk dance performed at many venues.

All of us Oriya married women who stay outside of Orissa or India are generally prevented from doing Pujas the traditional way because of a lack of Puja books, knowledge or the right atmosphere.

Savitri generally falls in the month of June. Married women decorate a "Sila Pua" (stone pestle) with haldi, sindur, bangles and read out the Savitri Katha. They touch the feet of their spouse and in-laws and generally observe a fast eating only the Puja bhog comprising of soaked mung, grated coconut, fruits, etc.

A Tumultuous Week - Some Patriotic Flavor on Gandhi Jayanti - Watch Mile Sur Mera Tumhara Video Online

It has been a really tumultuous week. The Ayodhya Verdict, all the hype and controversy leading upto the Commonwealth Games and more importantly the Clash of the Titans with the Two Test India - Australia Series!

The Commonwelth Games Open tomorrow to hopefully a grand start. AR Rehman has provided the theme song "Jiyo Utho Badho Jeeto" for the CW Games - and so far it has been the best part of the Games!

On the occasion of the Gandhi Jayanti - here is an awesome video on National Integration which touched all our hearts when it was telecast on DD during the late 1980s. "Mile Sur Mera Tumhara Toh Sur Bane Hamara" - meaning "when your and mine music join it becomes our music" was recorded in 14 languages and features the top artistes of our times.

There are even two lines of Oriya in the song - "Tumara Amara Swarara Milana Shrusti Kari Chalu Eka Tana"

When I had seen the movie, in I guess very early eighties, I had just fallen in love with it. Mahasweta, at her very best, was the bubbly village girl - who Prashanta Nanda (the Sahari Babu) wowed and wooed and eventually seduced. The village girl and town boy theme (or the reverse as in Dora) was very very popular in old oriya movies. This movie followed the accepted storyline when Prashanta Nanda left the village, married again and forgot all about the village belle and her still unborn child. Mohsin was in a nice cameo with a great song "Hitalika Bombalika".

Sikandar Alam Is Dead (RIP) - The Great Oriya Singer is No More

Sikandar Alam, the great Oriya singer who is famous for his mellifuous voice and Bhajans - is dead. Mr. Alam died of a cardiac arrest at the age of 71. He is survived by his wife and two daughters.

Sikandar Alam's repertoire included a great many devotional songs and Jagannath songs. Some of his famous movies for which he was a playback singer include Amada Bata, Adina Megha, Punarmilana, Kula Chandrama, Puja, Mamata.

Some of his famous songs in a career spanning 50 years and at least 50 Oriya movie are

Behind The Scenes at "I Am She" Miss Universe | Ipsita Pati | Sushmita Sen | Tantra Entertainment

Sushmita Sen's Tantra Entertainment runs the "I Am She Miss Universe" - a national level pageant to select the model who goes to represent India at the Miss Universe Pageant. Pantaloon's Femina  Miss India Contest winners will represent India at the Miss World, Miss Earth, Miss International contests. This is the first year Tantra Entertainment has won the franchisee to select the contestant.

For us Oriyas - there is more news and action from the I am She Miss Universe 2010. Ipsita Pati - an Oriya model from Vizag who represented at the event filed a complaint at a Bhubaneswar P.S. against Tantra. She went on to say that the event was mismanaged and she was starved during the grooming. She lost so much weight eventually that she was disqualified for being underweight! So that's life behind the arclights. Tough Ipsita. Tough way to learn at 18 - that life is not fair.

Ipsita alleged that she was replaced by someone from West Bengal. And the winner was Ushoshi Sengupta from West Bengal - so...any inference there...if the clue is Sushmita too is a Bong ;-)

I don't know how much this whistle-blowing is going to help Ipsita's career. I hope she gets over the trauma and has a successful life ahead - in whatever field she chooses. From her biodata - it appears she is immensely talented!

Sandhyadipa Kar - Odissi Dancer Par Excellence

As i was going through some Odissi dance snippets posted on FB of a friend's child - I was reminded of my childhood friend Sandhyadipa Kar. Sandhya or Deepa is the daughter of the renowned Oriya Music composer Prafulla Kar. She trained in Odissi dance from her childhood with Guru Shri Kelu Charan Mohapatra. Her love of the art form is evident in the zeal with which she has pursued Odissi with teaching, workshops, performances (some combined performances with her renowned Father and brother being much anticipated in Oriya communities the World over) for the past 15 years - combined with a busy family life. She is of course one of the eminent exponents of Odissi today.

It is again the time of the year when the three deities of the Puri Jaggannath Temple visit their Mausi at Gundicha. Jagannath, Balabhadra and Subhadra along with the Sudarshan will ride in their respective chariots Nandighosh, Taladhwaja and Darpadalana to their beloved Aunt's place at Gundicha Mandir for their annual holiday.

The swaying praying conveyance of the deities accompanied by cymbals and trumpets is an elaborate process done with the utmost reverence and is known as "Pahandi".

After Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra and Goddess Subhadra have been enthroned on their chariots - the ruler and King of Puri (only a symbolic runer now, in republic India) sweeps the chariots to get them ready for the journey.This part of the ritual is known as "Chera Pahara".

Then the journey starts. the huge cocunut ropes attached to the chariots are pulled by tens of thousands of devotees starting with the Chariot of the eldest brother Lord Balabhadra, then Goddess Subhadra and the finally that of the Lord of the Universe - lord Jagannath accompanied to the huge cries of the devotees. The juggernaut (yes, actually derived from the rolling of Jagannath's chariot) continues till it reaches Gundicha Mandir - with a slight break at another small "Mausima" Mandir in between.

The sights and intense devotion at the Rath Yatra, congregation of literally millions - where even an square inch of space is fought for in the hot sun or drizzle for the few miles of the journey - are treasured remembrances. This year our ancestral house on this same route was sold off. I really don't know when I will next be privy to the blessed Darshan and the pulling of the Rath during the Rath Yatra. But i know I will remember and dream of it forever.

This classic ode to Orissa is in a new form on Oriya Television. Featuring some greats of Oriya music - this video is well shot and sleek in appearance. Only thing missing is that some credits could have been given for the singers. I could identify Prafulla Kar, Pranab Pattnaik, Trupti Das and some others. But some of the faces are new - and I have stopped listening to new Oriya songs for quite a long time now to identify the new generation of singers.
