Kamala Desa Raj Kumara - Prafulla Kar, the Legend Turns 80

As usual, 15th and 16th February were days of delightful celebration for Oriya music lovers. Padmashri Prafulla Kar's Birthday is celebrated by the PKF (Prafulla Kar Foundation) on those days at a public venue, with free entry. A galaxy of Oriya superstar singers generally grace the occasion and the evening reverberates with tunes of Old Oriya Songs from decades back.

This year the celebrations were even more special as the legend turned 80 years. This year also marked another change. The absence of veteran Singer Shri Chitta Jena. The singer, who was a long time friend of Prafulla Kar, was a regular attendee at his soirees. It was Chitta Jena's mellifluous voice which made many of Prafulla Kar's compositions jewels of Odia Music.

Whoever can forget "Mo Priya Tharu Kiye Adhika Sundara" from the movie Sindura Bindu? A visibly moved Shri Kar narrated how he had composed the song on a terrace and Chitta Jena had lent his voice.

Music legend Pranab Pattnaik sang a few songs. Hindi singer Sarika Singh lent her jazzy voice to some Oriya tunes like "jhumka tike tu ta halei de"

Here are some memorable photos from the occasion.

The Boat Song - by Chimera and Antara

There is a new generation of Odia singers out there who do not shy away from experimenting. Recently came across a wonderful composition called the "Boat Song" which evokes the mystery and tales of the Boatman. The song has a strong essence of folk and tradition and has a mixture of two languages.

And talking about Boat songs, this one doesn't have the phrase "majhi re" even once in the first stanza! well slips it in at the end though...

"Mate bhaseilure re, mate budeilure, akula nadira tara kula nahi re"

Like the lyrics, the song has a spirit of limitlessness well portrayed by the young team.

The song is produced by Sumantra Mishra, Professor of Architecture at PMCA, Cuttack.

The song is sung by young architecture student Antara Ghosal and Chimera, and features PMCA-ians Mondip Kalita on bass, Rex Walter Sangma on rhythm. Tuhina lip syncs for Antara in the video. The song is a fusion of Oriya, Assamese and Bengali folk music.

Wishing this very young team the very best in their future compositions.

Hrudayara Ei Sunyata Ku - Oriya lyrics and English

The song Hrudayara Ei Sunyata Ku is probably one of the most popular old oriya songs ever.
The song sung by Sekhar Ghosh is from the movie "Samar Salim Saiman". The lyricist of this song is Nizam.

Mona Dash, poet and writer, has attempted here an English translation of this eponymous song. Heart rending, isnt it?

Hrudayara Ei Sunyataku Aji Pachari Mu Jebe Sune
Pratarana Kiye Kahaku Deichi Pratidhwani Kahe Tume Tume Tume

"Today I ask my hearts emptiness
Who forsook whom
The answer echoes back
And says you you you"

Tume Mo Manara Sima Rekha Dein Sahaje paricha Jai-2
Hele Mo Padati Tuma Smuti Rekha Tapi jai Pare Nahein-2
Janena Kahein Ki Mo Nirabataku Biraha Tumari Niti Chume
Pratarana Kiye.......

"You have easily crossed the boundaries of my mind
But I have not been able to cross the threshold of your memories
I dont know why your separation kisses my loneliness every day
The echo comes back
You you you"

Thila Se Kipari Bhaba Prabanata Hasuchi Mu Mane Mane-2
Tolibaku Eka Kuhudi Ra Ghara Bahari Thili Mu Dine-2
Se Kuhudi Ghara Gala Bhangi jara Pritira Prachira Thila Tame
Pratarana Kiye......

"What a time of intense emotion, I smile to myself
I wanted to build a house made of mist one day
That house of mist with a boundary wall of love
Broke down
The answer echoes back
You you you"
